The Battle of Culloden 1746 was fought between the Jacobite forces, comprised largely of Scottish Highlanders, and Loyalist troops, who were mostly English. The Jacobites, led by Charles Edward Stuart 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', wanted to overthrow the House of Hanover and restore the House of Stuart to the British throne. Total combatants numbered approximately 15,000 men and the Government army of 8,000 troops routed the Jacobite forces which suffered approximately 2,000 casualties (cf. 300 Loyalist casualties).
