An Lanntair (Gaelic for The Lantern) has its origins as a small progressive arts centre which was established in Stornoway Town Hall in 1985.
When it relocated to its current venue in 2005 it was envisioned as "a lantern, a beacon, and a lighthouse" for arts in the north-west of Scotland.
Since its modest beginnings it has established itself as one of the most dynamic award-winning arts centres in Scotland with a distinctive cultural identity.
The centre promotes and champions the best in visual and performing arts and has hosted exhibitions to national and international acclaim. It hosts two annual three-day events, The Hebrides Book Festival and the Hebrides International Film Festival.
The facility incorporates a gallery and a 250 seat multi-purpose auditorium which hosts a variety of events and live performances, including theatre, cinema, concerts and conferences. It also includes a restaurant, bar, and shop.
