The Outer Hebrides is the heartland of Gaelic language and culture, and the Scottish Government has created an ongoing action plan through its Communities of the Future strategy to attempt to regenerate and revitalise the islands' economies.
Gaelic media offers the Outer Hebrides significant development potential, and the expansion of arts and cultural development is viewed as one of the essential components and drivers of economic growth.
The Stornoway Media Village has been established to promote the presence and development of Gaelic media and businesses through globally connected leading-edge technologies. The Village comprises a television production company MG Alba, and its broadcasting partner BBC Alba, and the Creative Industries and Media Centre.
MG Alba produces high quality television programmes for BBC Alba, the multi-platform Gaelic television channel, which is broadcast throughout the United Kingdom and is watched by 500,000 viewers each week. Facilities also exist is Glasgow and the Isle of Skye.
The Village also hosts the local community Isles FM Radio station and the national Gaelic radio broadcaster Radio Nan Gaidheal. Acair which publishes a wide range of Gaelic material, and is the principal publisher of Gaelic texts for children in Scotland, is also located there.
The Creative Industries and Media Centre also offers 1,000 sqm of serviced office and hot desk facilities for lease to creative businesses and freelancers, particularly those associated with Gaelic. It has also provided additional office and production-related space to the adjacent MG Alba facility.
