The Lews Castle College of Further Education, which opened in 1953, and Campus of the University of the Highlands and Islands ('UHI'), has its main facility in the grounds of Lews Castle, with two learning centres in Benbecula and Barra.
It has 150 staff, more than 2,700 students, 300 of whom are full-time, and more than 60 full-time and 80 part-time courses. It has in excess of 30 Higher National Certificate, Higher National Diploma, Undergraduate Degree, Postgraduate Degree, and other higher education programmes, and it also offers more than 200 evening classes throughout the islands.
The college hosts major research projects in energy engineering, and the campus is developing as a principal research cluster within the UHI, focusing on renewable energy and low carbon research and development. The college is a campus of the University of the Highlands and Islands which comprises 13 colleges and research institutions.
