Schools - Stornoway - 1 Minute Read
The Nicolson Institute is the only six-year secondary school on Lewis and it has a student population of approximately 1,000 pupils.
Its roots can be traced back to 1865 when a young businessman from Stornoway, Alexander Nicolson, was tragically killed that year in an explosion on one of his vessels in Shanghai Harbour, China. His estate donated money to set up a school in his home town which resulted in the creation, and the opening, of the Nicolson Institute in 1873.
The school has a strong academic record and sends approximately 100 senior pupils to university each year, with many more going onto further education. A new £55 million Nicolson Institute opened in August 2012.
The only primary school in the town is Stornoway Primary School which has approximately 300 pupils on the school roll.
